High Performance Working
High Performance work practices are work practices that could be introduced with the aim of improving organisational performance. Organisations that adopt such practices are referred to as High Performance work organisations. High performance work practices are not actually new practices, they are probably practices that employees are already familiar with such as work appraisals, flexible working options, family friendly policies, training and continous development opportunities, good recruitment and selection policies, pay and incentives and many others that may improve business results.
These practices could lead to high staff retention, high motivation, better staff development and career opportunities.High Performance Working emphasises autonomy, participation and learning and these increase employee involvement and commitment which can in turn lead to increased organisational performance because the more committed the staff are, the better they are likely to perform.
Like other practices, High Performance Working is not without barriers. Despite the evidence of the gains, the are barriers such as finances, training, resistance to change, reputational risk, management style and communication.
